Sugar reduction for drinks and foods: the new Brazilian objective

Reducing sugar in drinks and food is Brazil's new goal. Understand the objective

Under the management of the Minister of Health, Gilberto Occhi, and the presidents of the Food Production Sector Association signed an agreement whose main goal is to reduce sugar in drinks and foods by the year 2022.

The deal, which follows the same parameter as what was done for sodium reduction, aims to reduce approximately 144 thousand tons of cake sugar, dairy products, drinks, stuffed cookies, chocolate drinks and other mixtures that contain a lot of sugar.

According to the association, Brazil is one of the first countries to express an interest in reducing sugar in processed foods and beverages, always respecting ANVISA standards, (National Health Surveillance Agency) together with ABIR (Brazilian Association of Soft Drinks and Non-Alcoholic Beverages), a ABIMAPI (Brazilian Association of Biscuit Industries, Pasta and Industrialized Breads and Cakes) and Viva Lácteos (Brazilian Dairy Association).

The Ministry of Health analyzed the sugar reduction criteria for drinks and foods and came to the conclusion that the products with the highest amount of sugar are biscuits and dairy products such as yogurt., dairy drinks, etc. According to researches, The goal is to remove 53,9% a 62,4% of sugar in compositions like these.

For chocolate products, the goal is to reduce up to 10,5% of sugar, while for other sugary drinks the reduction can reach up to 33,8%. In some cases, replacing sugar with sweetener can be adopted.

Excess sugar: cause of chronic diseases!

According to the WHO (World Health Organization), Brazilians consume around 50% more sugar than recommended. I.e, per day, each person consumes about 18 teaspoons of sugar, or equivalent to 80g.

This excessive consumption of sugar per day impacts the increase in chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity and other clinical conditions.

Changing habits: solution to avoid chronic diseases!

Practicing physical exercise along with a balanced diet helps reduce the risk of excess sugar in the blood and, that way, affect people's health with the onset of chronic diseases.

Additionally, in the year of 2017 the Ministry of Health adopted methods that aim to curb the growth of overweight and obesity in Brazil. The intention is to reduce the consumption of industrialized products containing sugar and increase good nutrition, rich in vegetables, vegetables and healthy fats.
